My name is Christina Gotelaere. I live in Colorado Springs, CO and am an online student at the University of Alabama completing my degree in their ASCEND accredited Food and Nutrition didactic program. I hope to graduate in a year and a half, complete an internship, and pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians to become an RD.
My progress has been a long time in coming. The first time I aimed at my degree I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do and so in a ‘non-committal’ fashion took various courses hoping an interest would fall into my lap. When that didn’t happen and my husband commissioned into the Air Force and our son was diagnosed with mild autism I determined it was time to take a break from school, move around with my husband in the military, and spend some time at home working and volunteering for various organizations until I could land on something I wanted to do.
Though it took a lot longer than I’d hoped (7 years), I have never been more sure of anything I wanted, but at the same time so unsure exactly how to traverse the path as there are no simple checklists in earning these credentials. While my advisor is helpful and the people I’ve met since joining my local dietetic association have a plethora of information, it can be a lot to take in. That being said, Coach Jess’ book is an invaluable tangible resource that is exceptionally well thought- and laid out. She covers everything from choosing a college and program (to include the pros, cons, and specifics of each) to common and expected questions to use in preparation for internship interviews to suggestions in how to prepare for the registration examination –all in a quick, simple, and concise format that won’t leave you searching and digging!
Having completed the process herself, she presents her material in a very relatable but professional and organized manner – not to mention that she has a way of making the reader more comfortable with a process that would bring the average person less then perfect peace. I recommend this book to anyone who is even considering a degree or career within the nutrition field as a simple but quality guide that will not deflate but encourage you to set your heart, do your work, and reach your goals as a future dietitian. Thanks so much for putting it into print, Jessica, as I am one to prefer my information in physical copy on my bookshelf full of notes, highlights, and bookmarks. It will be a regular quick reference guide for me as I continue down ‘The Road to RD.’
